In the series, he and his wife are poisoned in Sarajevo as part of a German plot. When Franz Ferdinand was born in 1863, he was just an average Archduke in terms of rank, and was not expected to amount to much more than a leading member of. He married Sophie Chotek in a morganatic marriage, which does not allow Alek to inherit any of his fathers titles and hereditary lands.
